HOFFMAN NATURAL EYEWEAR
Hoffman frame makers hail from Kelberg in the volcanic Eifel have been handcrafting natural horn frames. Long years of experience of working with this unusual material, a flair for perfection and unmistakable design make the work of our specialists into a triumph of the art of handcrafting. The design of Hoffman natural horn frames has little in common with the image of the classic horn frame. Created using traditional handcrafting techniques, they reflect modern design both in shape and colour. Whether delicate or striking, these natural horn frames are unrivalled pieces.
Designed & Handmade in Germany
Nature is the source of Hoffman’s inspiration – and provides the materials for Hoffmann Natural Eyewear.
Wood, genuine horn, slate…or even more uncommon ideas with snakeskin or alpaca hair.
All of these materials are precious and symbolic threads of nature’s stories. Their appeal to the eye and to the skin can be seen and felt in every fibre.
Hoffmann Natural Eyewear considers it especially important that the beauty and uniqueness of the natural materials are retained and enhanced in the eyewear. With every frame, an individual and unrivalled masterpiece is created.
DESIGN & CRAFTSMANSHIP
The design of frames from Hoffmann Natural Eyewear has little in common with the concept of classic horn spectacles. Although created using traditional handcrafting techniques, it reflects both the shapes and colours of modern design. Whether delicate or striking, these natural horn frames are unique. The pleasantly warm surface of natural horn frames provides the owner with a sensual frame-wearing experience.
The horn is gained in harmony with nature and only the most attractive horn may become part of a Hoffmann Natural Eyewear frame. Around 40 individual steps are needed on the way from water buffalo horn to spectacle frame.
HISTORY & AWARDS
Hoffmann Natural Eyewear was founded in 1978 by Joseph Hoffmann. His philosophy consisted of offering pure, natural horn as an alternative to tortoiseshell which started becoming disused for reasons of wildlife conservation.
Current Owner and CEO, Wolfgang Thelen, was building up distribution structures for Hoffmann in Switzerland and Southern Germany between 1992 and 1994. In 1996, he founded the company IVKO, initially producing aluminum frames. In 2000, they wanted to focus on a niche market that was not too crowded, so they ended up taking over Mr. Hoffmann’s company and have since expanded from 10 employees to now over 50. Hoffmann Natural Eyewear can be found in many countries within and outside of Europe.
THE MAKING OF HOFFMAN NATURAL EYEWEAR
Genuine horn is a tried and tested material for eyewear and is one of the oldest frame materials in the world. Hoffmann Natural eyewear uses the horn of the Asian water buffalo. The special way that light is reflected and the warm enticing appearance of the horn are inimitable.
The unparalleled grain and hues speak for themselves, and the wearer can choose from a multitude of horn shades. The spectrum ranges from grey and anthracite tones to shades of brown and even white horn. And what is more, horn can be coloured using natural dyes so that innumerous shades can be incorporated into the eyewear concept.
This natural material is worked with a great love of detail. Hoffmann Natural Eyewear creates buffalo horn frames of an incomparable lightness combined with high stability. Genuine horn frames are exceptionally comfortable to wear and an excellent choice for people with skin allergies.
