Introducing the Systane® iLUX® Thermal Pulsation System

Urban Optiks is excited to introduce the latest in dry eye treatment technology, the Systane® iLUX® Thermal Pulsation System from Alcon, which can restore eye health and comfort for people suffering from chronic dry eyes due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

iLUX® is a handheld device that uses light source heating and compression intended to help your Meibomian glands express oils to protect your tears. The innovative minimally-evasive procedure uses gentle pressure and soothing heat to remove blockages from the meibomian glands. Clinical studies show that iLUX® can significantly improve meibomian gland function and alleviate uncomfortable dry eye symptoms.

Does it really relieve Dry Eye?

The iLUX® device has been shown to significantly reduce dry eye symptoms such as gritty eyes and irritation. In a clinical study, patients’ meibomian gland scores were three times better at two weeks post-treatment and four times better at four weeks, compared to baseline.

Why is it important for the meibomian glands to function well?

Every time you blink, a protective layer of moisture called the tear film coats the front surface of your eye. An essential part of the tear film is an oily layer called meibum. In the same way oil-topped water will help prevent water from evaporating, meibum helps protect the watery aqueous layer of your eye from evaporating and causing dry eye. MGD occurs when the meibomian glands that produce meibum get blocked or the secreted meibum is of poor quality and the aqueous part of the tears can evaporate, as there is no oily layer to help prevent evaporation.

As MGD progresses and you have less oil or poor-quality oil, you may begin to experience increased burning, itchiness, irritation, dryness, grittiness or blurry vision. Some symptoms get worse when you are on the computer for a long time or if your home or office is dry from air conditioning or heating.

Due to the chronic and progressive nature of MGD, you may not notice any signs or symptoms. Like other chronic and progressive diseases, like diabetes or glaucoma, it is best to manage MGD as soon as it is diagnosed.

MGD is a Chronic & Progressive Disease

As there is no permanent cure, it is important to keep your meibomian glands healthy and functioning.

How does the iLUX® treatment work?

iLUX® is a non-surgical treatment which usually takes less than 15 minutes. The doctor will place the iLUX® device over your eyelid and you will feel warmth and gentle pressure. Your eye doctor will then remove any excess meibum oil.

Patients do not typically find this treatment to be painful or uncomfortable—some even say it is like a "warm eye massage!"

With your doctor by your side every step of the way, the iLUX® treatment device incorporates the innovative Smart Tip Patient Interface to deliver treatment directly to the blocked meibomian glands. You can provide real time feedback as they administer therapeutic heat and then express the oil. Once the glands are unblocked, it will be easier for the oil to be released naturally.

After your treatment, you will notice some immediate relief in your dry eye symptoms with continual improvement in the weeks after treatment. No downtime or special recovery steps are needed after treatment. The iLUX® targeted treatment  typically eases patient’s symptoms for up to 6-8 months.

What other medical treatment options are there?

While there are over the counter drops and prescription medications aimed at treating dry eye and MGD symptoms, the Systane® iLux® Thermal Pulsation System heats and compresses the glands in your eyelids so that your glands can become unblocked, allowing the oil to start flowing to your tear film again. This allows your eye doctor to get to the root cause of your MGD.

MGD is a chronic and progressive disease, so it is important to keep your meibomian glands healthy and functioning.

Important information for Systane® iLUX® device

The Systane® iLUX® Device is used to heat and compress glands in the eyelids of adult patients with a specific type of dry eye, called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), also known as evaporative dry eye. Potential side effects may include eyelid / eye pain requiring stopping the treatment procedure, eyelid / eye irritation or inflammation, temporary reddening of the skin, and other eye symptoms (burning, stinging, tearing, itching, discharge, redness, feeling like there is something in the eye, changes in your vision, sensitivity to light).
